HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Fiasco was started in 2003 by a gentleman named Matt Wilson. He knew that Calgary deserved amazing gelato, made by old world standards. Matt’s friendship with James Boettcher, who helped with design strategy, constantly developed and ultimately sent Fiasco down a whole new path.

In 2009 James acquired Fiasco, reduced it to one storefront, and re-invented the brand. Soon after, the store was gutted by a fire. The lease renewal, only 6 months later, made it impossible to continue and James spent the the first half of 2010 rethinking business. Finding a garage to make the first few batches, then a 100ft commissary space. 

As a team we have stared adversity in the face and always prevailed. In 2012 we moved, to what we now refer to as ‘The little Gelato shop that Could’ where we transformed into a wholesale purveyor of the some of the finest Italian Ice Cream in Canada- with a commitment to changing the way business is done. We put people and purpose above all else and thought more about our community and impact than how much we have left at the end of the day. But as the company went from 5 employees, to 25 over a couple years, we quickly felt the growing pains of our beloved “A20” not being big enough for us anymore.

FIASCO HQ &
GELATO FACTORY


 

In August, 2015 we took a huge step and moved into our new HQ, and opened the doors to our Fiasco Gelato Factory and Coffee Bar. Not only do we sell Gelato by the scoop and by the pint, but our coffee bar also offers espresso drinks using Cafe Rosso Espresso.

Our only retail location is also where all our gelato is hand crafted. You can take a peek through the windows at our kitchen and see where all the magic happens. Tours of our space are always welcomed - we love to give a behind the scenes look at what goes on at Fiasco everyday.

Fiasco Pints are made from 100% post-consumer recycled PET plastic. That means our jars used to be jars. And they will be jars again, because PET plastic is one of the most widely recycled materials. And 94% percent of North American households have access to PET recycling.

The design of the jar with the lid truly encourages up cycling. Check out the hashtag #recyclehappiness to see how some of our fans reuse the containers for all sorts of things!

 
 
 

RECYCLE

Because it’s the best truly recyclable packaging we could find that allowed us to showcase our product and have the feature of a screw top lid. Most ice cream and gelato is in “paper” cartons, which are actually laminated combinations of fibre-board and several layers of polyethylene plastic, which is not actually recyclable, like most coffee cups. When these cartons do get “recycled”, they don’t get recycled back into cartons. They are waste and end up in the land fill.
